Ready for the Captain America Workout?

Chris Evans previously played another super hero in the Fantastic Four movies, Johnny Storm, aka, The Human Torch. He was quite fit for that role but playing Steve Rogers, super soldier, required a Captain America Workout that had him bulk up a bit to the tune of about 20 pounds of muscle.

Chris Evans did a serious workout to get ready for playing a super soldier. As he put it, “We did two hours a day, and it was brutal. I usually like working out. Going in sucks, but walking out, you’re like, ‘I’m glad I did that!’” the star told PopSugar.

“This was different. I’d walk out and I’d be like, ‘I need to vomit. I hate this trainer. I hate this movie. I want to go to sleep for a week.’ It was just relentless. I’ve got a fast metabolism and I lose weight very quickly, so for me to get big, it was just eat a lot.”

Working out sucked, eating sucked more. You get to a point where you just can’t even look at another piece of chicken. You’re just so bloated, but you just have to keep consuming protein, so that was tricky.”

Chris wasn’t looking for the bulky legs and thunder thighs of a serious bodybuilder but he definitely needed to add some real muscular bulk to his upper body for this role.

So his routine wouldn’t be the typical one you’d see bodybuilders engaged in with lots of heavy leg work like squats.

If you want the killer Hollywood look and not the cartoon bodybuilding look, check out the Captain America Workout This really effective muscle building routine also fixes the one flaw I’ve found in Chris Evans workout routine in preparing for this movie.

When you’re trying to build muscle mass, you do NOT need to workout two hours per day! That’s crazy! You can get an effective mass building routine in 30 to 45 minutes, an hour a day tops.

One great way to do that is with a bodyweight exercise routine, something Chris has had success with in the past. And two phenomenal exercises for serious upper body muscle like Chris displays in Captain America: The First Avenger, is doing pull ups and dips. These two exercises alone workout your entire upper body.

Here’s a sample routine you could try:

Chris Evans Workout

1. Reverse Lunges
2. Dips
3. Bodyweight Squats
4. Pull ups
5. 1 Leg Deadlifts
6. Push ups
7. Chin ups
8. Jump Rope
9. V Push ups
10. Jump Lunges

You can go for different rep counts or try hitting each exercise for 30 seconds before movin gon to the next exercise. After completing all ten exercise (5 minutes total time) take a 2 minute rest and repeat.
